Millions of people pray the Lord’s Prayer every day without fully understanding the weight of the words: “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done.” In today’s episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef explains that this prayer is a declaration of allegiance: “King Jesus, You rule supreme over my life.”
The King and the Kingdom are inseparable. We cannot claim citizenship in God’s Kingdom while refusing the reign of Christ over our hearts, priorities, decisions, and desires. To pray for God’s Kingdom to come is to say, “King Jesus, take over.”
Dr. Youssef warns that our prayers can easily become dominated by our own plans, needs, and agendas. God cares for His children and invites us to bring our needs to Him, but when those needs become the center of our lives, they can become idols. Soon, instead of praying for God’s will to be done, we begin asking God to bless our own will.
True surrender is not passive resignation—it is active faith in the goodness and sovereignty of God. As we lay every desire, ambition, and fear at Christ’s feet, the Holy Spirit aligns our hearts with the Father’s purposes and leads us in obedience. Only under the lordship of Jesus do we experience lasting peace, joy, and spiritual victory.
