God’s Word does more than reveal what needs to change—it has the power to cleanse and transform us as we obey its Truth. Dr. Michael Youssef explains how Scripture, applied by the Holy Spirit, washes away sinful patterns and produces Christlike character.
A mirror can show you what is wrong, but imagine having no way to wash or clean what you see. That is how many people approach the Bible: They recognize their sin and failure, feel powerless to change, and eventually close the Book in discouragement.
But Scripture is more than a mirror. In today’s episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef points to the Bible’s cleansing power. Ephesians describes Christ sanctifying His church through “the washing with water through the word,” while Peter reminds believers that obedience to the Truth purifies the soul.
We cannot transform ourselves through willpower. But when we receive God’s Word, believe it, and obey it, the Holy Spirit works through that Truth to change our hearts. Resentment can give way to love. Sinful attitudes can be replaced with Christlike ones. The grime of sin does not have to remain.
So when Scripture reveals something in your life that needs to change, do not turn away in defeat. Let the water of God’s Word wash over you. Submit to its Truth, obey what God reveals, and trust the Holy Spirit to continue His cleansing, transforming work in your soul.
Prayer: God, thank You for the good news that I can change—that I won’t always struggle with sin. I know You have defeated sin at the cross and have empowered me to obey You. What grace and mercy that You are bringing me from one point of glory to the next. Thank you! I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
“Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart” (1 Peter 1:22).
